Gotham City series gearing up for TV

Fox is bringing the dark alleys of Gotham City home to television. Gotham will follow the origin story of James Gordon on his journey from police detective to eventual Commissioner Gordon and Batman ally.

Southland's Ben McKenzie has been cast as Gordon, with the series aiming to focus on Gordon's early days, as well as the origin stories of Gotham City's most notorious residents, including a young Batman, The Joker and The Penguin.

Bruno Heller (HBO's Rome and The Mentalist) wrote the pilot and will executive produce the series with Warner Brothers Television.

According to Fox Entertainment, Gotham aims to be a true origin story, preceding the characters donning their costumes. “We’re not starting in that world where the villains are in costume,” said Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly.. “You see markers for it that are delicious you see where the evolution and eccentricity where they become those characters. We don’t start off with capes and costumes.”
